Lake Duluti

Lake Duluti : The Home Of Birds And Reptiles : The Lake Duluti Forest Reserve is situated in Tanzania‘s northern Arumeru District, which is part of the Arusha Region. The lake is 63 hectares in size and 700 meters deep at its deepest point. The lake has a natural forest surrounding it. The volcanic water’s emerald hue and the lack of an above-ground stream feeding it, which suggests that the lake gets its water from subsurface flows, are the lake’s standout tourist attractions.

The natural forest surrounding the lake is teeming with wildlife, including fish eagles, cormorants, ospreys, and kingfishers, as well as reptiles like green mambas and monitor lizards and several bird species. Also, the variety of tree species creates a prayer mountain and a lovely view.

LAKE DULUTI HIGHLIGHTS

Within a volcanic crater, Lake Duluti receives water all year round, primarily from groundwater and seasonal rains. Visitors to Lake Duluti have the option of kayaking around the lake to see it from a different angle. This is an excellent way to explore the lake’s marshy parts, which are home to large, loud papyrus plants and colorful bird nesting spots. A canoe excursion around the lake typically lasts between two and three hours.

Up to 200 m high, the Crater Lake’s sides are mostly hidden by dense vegetation. Many reptiles live in these dense forests because they offer a good environment for nesting and hunting. Several cormorant groups that congregate to fish in the lake are evidence that the lake has an abundance of fish.

If you enjoy walking, you must take the hike around the crater. You can follow a little path through the trees that offers just enough cover. You can walk comfortably during the warmest part of the day thanks to its shade.

Nonetheless, there is a “window” from which climbers can enjoy the breathtaking views of Mount Meru and Mount Kilimanjaro as well as birds. The hike around the lake takes up to two hours and is accompanied by a ranger from the Duluti Forest Reserve.

 LAKE DULUTI SIZE

Although the depth of the lake is unknown, locals believe it to be about 700 meters deep. Locals have reported that the city of Arusha allegedly had intentions to use the lake’s water to meet all of the city’s needs.

Lake Duluti has a surface area of about 63 hectares and a width of roughly 1100 m. The 200-meter-high crater rim is mostly hidden by the dense forest. These deep woodlands are home to many snakes and other reptiles because they provide an excellent environment for hunting and egg-laying. Up to 2-meter-long giant monitor lizards are frequently spotted relaxing in the sun on dead branches.

HOW DO I GET THERE?

The Arusha-Moshi highway, which turns south near Tengeru, is the best route to take to reach the lake. The turning point has numerous signs, and from there, you may either take a taxi to the lake or walk for about a kilometer. There are numerous signs pointing the way to the lake, which is at the end of Duluti Road.

There are other roads leading to the location (in addition to those mentioned); however, they become impassable during the wet season. Making use of a tour and travel companies would be a safer alternative method of transportation.
