How to Get There

 By Air: Direct flights from Mombasa or Malindi can take you to Lamu. You must connect through Nairobi (JKIA) because no international flights arrive directly in either Mombasa or Malindi. The flight from Nairobi to either city only lasts an hour.

As the airports are less crowded, it is also advised to drive to Malindi from Mombasa and then take a flight from there to Lamu. Additionally, while traveling from Mombasa to Malindi, you will have the opportunity to take in the coastal scenery.

By Road: Taking a bus from Mombasa to Lamu is the quickest way to get there by road. Buses in large numbers travel to the island. We recommend taking Tawakal buses since they have express semi-luxury buses.

CLIMATE

Lamu experiences its warmest weather from January through March. From July to September, temperatures are generally cooler. The daily average temperature ranges from 26 to 32 C (80 to 90 F), depending on the season. Nighttime lows are between 73 and 79 F (23 and 26 C), depending on the season.

There are two wet seasons on the Island. June marks the beginning and end of the long rainy season, which lasts for an average of 12 to 18 days and produces 7 to 12 inches of rain per month. Beginning in November and ending in December, the shorter rainy season it produces an average of 2 to 4 inches of rain per month over the course of 8 to 10 days. Two dry seasons exist on the island. The short one lasts from January to February, while the long one runs from July to October.
